Drifters is a fantasy seinen manga by Kōta Hirano. It has been published since April 30, 2009 in Young King Ours magazine. The plot is based on both historical and fictional incursion as it brings together and contrasts many real historical characters from different eras and countries in a world where various races from traditional fantasy folklore coexist with humans and where certain beings are endowed with supernatural powers (summon scrolls, pyrokinesis, among others). An anime adaptation by Hoods Drifters Studio was broadcast between October and December 2016 on Tokyo MX in Japan. Three OVAs were then marketed between December 2017 and December 2018. It’s been years since the first season premiered and in this article, we are going to tell you whether you can expect a second season of Drifters anytime soon.
The second season of Drifters still hasn’t been confirmed or canceled yet. The first season aired five years ago and while there still is a lot of material to adapt from the now-finished manga series, the second season is still uncertain. Having said all of this, Drifters is a very talked-about series, and based on all the known facts, a second season is not impossible. We just don’t know when it could happen.
The rest of this article will bring you all the known and unknown information related to a potential season 2 of Drifters. You’re going to find out about its potential release date, whether there is a trailer, what the story could be about, and much more about this exciting anime series whose future is still somewhat uncertain.
Will Drifters Season 2 happen?
The manga has been published in Shōnen Gahōsha’s Young King OURs magazine since April 2009. This also publishes the chapters collected in 6 volumes so far (as of July 2022). Volume 5 sold over 384,000 copies in the first four weeks of publication. An English translation is published by Dark Horse Comics. The German translation was published by Planet Manga (Panini); so far 6 volumes (as of July 2022) have been published. A French translation by Éditions Tonkam was also published, an Italian by J-Pop, and a Polish by Japonica Polonica Fantastica.
An anime clip directed by Rōyoji Nakamori and Masanori Komine is released with the tenth volume of Hellsing Ultimate. An anime adaptation was announced in March 2015. A 36-minute OVA was released in June 2016 with the limited edition of volume 54. The television series is then broadcast from October 2016 on Tokyo MX in Japan.
A second season was announced in December 2016 at the end of the broadcast of the twelfth episode of the first season. The thirteenth and fourteenth episodes were released directly on DVD in December 2017, followed by a fifteenth episode in December 2018. It turned out that these three OVA episodes were branded as a second season, but that was not a full and proper season, just a series of three OVA episodes, so we have to assume that the second season has been either shelved or postponed. What does this mean?
As you can see, the future of the Drifters anime is quite uncertain, but not because there’s no interest or because there’s a lack of material. The series is very popular and we’ll just have to see whether there is enough interest for a continuation to make any proper predictions about the potential continuation of the series. The manga did well, and the first season received solid reviews, but it’s been a while and there has been no news on the show’s future.
In any case, the earliest we could see a potential second season is late 2023, but we’d have to get some confirmation on the future during 2022 or easily 2023; 2024 is also a strong possibility. The fans are demanding a new season, but we’ll just have to see how it goes; as far as things stand now, a cancelation has not been confirmed, but we cannot rule it out either.
What could be the plot of Drifters Season 2?
At this moment, we do not know how far the second season of Drifters could take us because we don’t know how many chapters of the manga the season could potentially adapt. Namely, due to a lack of information in general, we have absolutely no clue how far the second season might go if it even happens. What follows is an overview of the source material that could be adapted in a potential second season.
During the Battle of Sekigahara, Shimazu Toyohisa manages to seriously injure Ii Naomasa, who decides to retreat. As Toyohisa wanders aimlessly around the battlefield, wounded and bleeding to death, he is teleported into a corridor with several doors. In the center is a strange man with several documents on his desk, among which is one referring to Shimazu.
Before he can express his surprise, the nearest door sucks him in and he wakes up in another world where historical figures and great warriors like him have been teleported from different times and places in the world. They will be known as Drifters. In this world coexist several fantastic races, such as elves, dwarves and hobbits, who are losing a great war against the human population.
These peoples, subjugated by humans, are forbidden to fraternize with the Drifters. However, the humans have their own war, almost lost, against another group of great warriors: the Offscourings, also called Ends. His goal is to take over the world and kill all the Drifters. Under the command of the Offscourings are various terrible creatures, such as dragons and orcs, which are used to destroy everything in their path.
At the start of the series, the Offscourings army is in control of the northern part of the continent, and they are currently trying to invade the south through a key fortress in the far north of the nation of Carneades. Meanwhile, the “Octobrist Organization”, a group of human wizards native to this world, tries to rally the Drifters to fight and save the world from their brutal enemies.
